Surf in Guanacaste

Tourism Chamber of Guanacaste features Surfing tours at the sunny side of Costa Rica.

Guanacaste is an internationally recognized surfing destination. Its beaches provide swells that are adequate for beginners as well as for experienced surfers. The tropical temperatures, warm waters and marine breeze offer perfect conditions for surfing all year long. The best time to enjoy an excellent swell is typically during the rainy season. The most famous beaches for surfing are Tamarindo, Roca Bruja located in the National Park Santa Rosa. Other excellent places include Marbella, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas. In Playa Grande the waves break in a well exposed place, just to the north of Tamarindo.

Playa Avellanas has various points where the waves break just across the beach, in addition to the estuary of the river. The edges of the river are great points as the intersecting waters cause waves to rise. Playa Negra is located close Avellanas, and it’s known for its break point at the edge of the reefs.
